Counselling Psychology

Sharon Mayer, Dr.Lynne Gravell

Counselling Psychology combines knowledge of psychological theory and principles with the skills of counselling and therapy.

The importance of the therapeutic relationship is central to this and enables the therapeutic process to develop within which the therapist and the client work together to gain a shared understanding of the client and the concerns that have brought them to personal psychological counselling.

Within this supportive environment individuals, couples or groups choose to explore issues that may be causing them distress such as: anxiety, depression, alcohol or drug misuse, family, work or relationship problems; or seek a greater level of self-awareness or personal development. The frequency and length of the therapy varies to suit the client.

Counselling Psychologists draw on a variety of psychological models to inform their practice. For example:- cognitive behavioural therapy which promotes behavioural change by changing the way that we think about things; person-centred therapy which works from the core conditions of empathic understanding, non-judgemental positive regard and genuiness; psychodynamic therapy which looks towards consciousness raising of the relevance that our early experience has had on the way that we live our lives.

It is the integration of these approaches to therapy within a caring therapeutic relationship, working collaboratively with the client that forms the basis of psychological counselling.
